SYNOPSIS

“This isn’t sport, and you aren’t women; you’re just tomboys.” These were some of the phrases the pioneers of rugby in Spain had to endure. Without female role models to look up to, they decided they could do it themselves and became a source of inspiration for those who followed. This is how Las Leonas (The Lionesses) were born, with the Spanish national team that participated in the first women’s rugby World Cup in history (Wales, 1991).

A la melée is the story of a collective struggle—of women from different generations, united by their love for a sport and determined to break stereotypes and barriers, to conquer the right to be and to belong. They are examples of attitude and respect, of perseverance and camaraderie, of diversity and inclusion, because everyone has value in this sport that proposes a way of thinking and feeling: a philosophy of life both on and off the pitch.
